RESULTS OF A STUDY OF PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM FIRST DIAGNOSED DURING PREGNANCY

Abstract

According to the authors, primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is uncommon
during pregnancy, but its exact prevalence is unknown..[1]The difficulty in determining its
incidence is due to the fact that many symptoms of PHPT, such as fatigue, constipation, and
nausea, are often mistaken for normal pregnancy symptoms. It is also unclear how many
pregnant women with PHPT had the condition before conception. In most cases, PHPT
during pregnancy is mild, with only a slight increase in blood calcium levels (usually no
more than 1 mg/dL above normal)
